All human beings have language, a sense of humor, and give names to things, people, and places--yet there is nearly infinite variety in how we express ourselves, in what we find funny, and what names mean to us. This month, Inside Creative Minds features Dr. Don L.F. Nilsen and Dr. Alleen Pace Nilsen, linguists at ASU who for over 30 years have been exuberantly sharing with their students the joys of language and who specialize in studying humor, naming, and young adult literature. The Nilsens are not only scholars in the same field (but with their own specialties) and co-authors, but have been also happily married for fifty years. They are scholars whose love of learning and joy in teaching inspires their students and everyone around them. "What a treat to have both professors in the same room," says ICM's host, Tray Goodman. "They made me want to go back to class. Don't judge this show by its topic--you won't want to ditch."

Show 11 features News Artist Andrew Long and Paula Moore, dancer and owner of Footprints Dance Studio. Mr. Long is the A-1 news artist of the Arizona Republic, meaning that if you see a graphic on the front page, he is likely to have created it! Mr. Long, as a reporter and an artist, helps create a news story visually using a combination of drawing and graphic design to help readers understand what has happened. His work ranges from drawing the events of a story to taking a reader visually inside an object (say, a space station's parts). Ms. Moore has been dancing since an early age, and has studied with luminaries such as Frank Hatchett of the Broadway Dance Center in New York City. As the owner of Footprints, Ms. Moore believes "there's a dancer in everyone" and even if someone has no interest in becoming a dancer, the physical and mental benefits of dance are marvelous. Ms. Moore teaches several types of dance, from ballet to tap to hip-hop and she reaches out to everyone from toddlers to seniors.

Show 9, shot entirely inside the Heard Museum during the Arizona running of the Heard's Remix exhibit, features award-winning filmmaker Dustinn Craig and painter, sculptor, and owner of the Chocolate Factory gallery Hector Ruiz. Mr. Craig produced and directed the segment We Shall Remain, part of PBS' American Experience. Mr. Craig combines his love of his Apache heritage with his love of skateboarding in his film for the Remix exhibit. Mr. Ruiz' incredible art, which touches on deeply emotive aspects of the human mind and is simultaneously very political, has caused a great deal of local comment and was featured in an article in Kontact Magazine. Mr. Ruiz is a combination of Kickapoo and Hispanic, which he feels gives him a unique perspective. The Remix exhibit was so well-known it was invited to New York City.

The 8th episode features filmmaker and SCC film professor Dr. Penelope Price. Apart from being a beloved and inspiring teacher of film, Dr. Price is the filmmaker who created the beautiful, award-winning documentary Artist of Resistance about the artist, Claudia Bernardi, who joins her sister who is part of the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team. The team is trying to discover the truth of whether mass graves of children in El Salvador are from a massacre or a battle. Bernardi creates a mural commemorating the dead children, becoming as she does so a sort of activist. The film explores these dual roles. Dr. Price received the 2001 Visual Arts Fellowship from the Arizona Art Commission to help create this film.

The 6th episode features goldsmith Catherine Garrigan and members of the improv comedy troupe the Jester'z. Ms. Garrigan creates one-of-a-kind wearable art pieces and has the title of Master Goldsmith. She is inspired by stones and especially likes finding the more unusual ones to fit into her settings. She has been part of the SMoCA fashion show. Jester'z is a hilarious comedy troupe whose family-friendly show has been riveting audiences for years. They have shows Friday and Saturday nights at the Star Theater in Scottsdale. (Note: you have to call for reservations as they get booked up fast! 480- 423-0120).

Show 5 features fashion designer Angela Johnson and architect Jerry Little. Ms. Johnson's designs use unique fabrics (such as old t-shirts) and have been featured parts of many fashion shows at places like the Herbeger and SMoCA. Mr. Little is the principal architect of S.E.A.D. (The Studio for the Exploration of Architecture in the Desert) Architecture + Construction, LLC. S.E.A.D.'s statement reads: "S.E.A.D. proposes architectural solutions that are respectful of the past, speak to the present and are pursuant of the future, through new applications of technology and materials".

The 4th episode features tattoo artist Erick Weir and sous-chef Dominic Zumpano. Mr. Weir, who adores the work of Brian Froud, plies his craft at Divinity Tattoo in Scottsdale. He is known there as Dubb, so use that name when making an appointment! (Side note for film buffs: Mr. Weir also appeared as the lead in the film Forever Midnight). Mr. Zumpano was until recently sous-chef at Elements Restaurant at the Camelback Resort. Mr. Zumpano has moved to Wisconsin, where he is chef at Unami Moto. He is scheduled to take part in the "Best Chef in East Town" competition in September.

Steve Weiss and Ed Dominguez The very first episode was shot at Modified Arts and features internationally-known painter Ed Dominguez and Steve Weiss, who is a black-and-white photographer, location scout, and executive director of No Festival Required. Mr. Weiss' unique views of Phoenix appear in many places, among them in Phoenix; America's Shining Star. Ed Dominguez now lives and shows in Las Vegas and is currently showing at Cob4lt Blu Studios and Gallery.
