David CampbellPhotographer At LargeI mostly shoot photos for my own amusement. As with most artists, in the beginning I tended to emulate the images and style of others whose work I admire. All art is pretty much derivative, so I don't pretend to break new ground, though I like to think I now have my own style, something that works for me. If other trained observers like what they see, all the better. It does help validate what I'm working toward. But even if I didn't get an affirmation, I would simply keep observing what works and try to head for what I see as that next level.Everything I shoot is something I would have on my own walls, if I lived in a museum. I don't mean to copy particular images, but the feel, style and use of light and depth of field. I don't usually intend to have messages in my work, except for those occasional shots that may convey some sense of irony, hypocrisy, humor or maybe a little outrage. When I've gotten paid for photos, it has usually been in the role of a photojournalist, either in name or in a de facto situation, or shooting weddings. That nearly always involved shooting people. My personal work has almost always involved inanimate objects -- they don't get impatient. But in recent years I have discovered the world of local acoustic musicians, and it has given me the chance (excuse, really) to hone my skills in challenging lighting situations with moving objects. In the process I discovered a major overlap between art and music. Many folks are skilled in both areas. I've come away with some fun photos and friendships with fun people. It has let me swim in the creative seas into which both worlds flow. David Campbell's membership has expired. If this is your account, please login to renew your membership! |
