Brooke Grucella

My work explores how people are affected by the expectation to live within society’s rules and the consequences that come when one breaks from the “system.” While engaging counterculture aesthetics, I investigate opposites inherent in relationships and how divergence shapes a person’s view of the world. Sex, gender, politics, depression, fear, love, loss and social strata become characters within each piece. I want to document the gray areas in between and examine the moment at which realities collide.

Brooke Grucella was raised in Southern California and grew up influenced by the diverse subcultures of Los Angeles. She draws inspiration from her upbringing, focusing particularly on urban and West Coast cultural aesthetics. She employs graffiti’s inherent universality to explore issues of sexuality and communication through the use of the traditionally male-dominated technique. She received her MFA from Arizona State University and has exhibited in Los Angeles, California, Scottsdale, Arizona, and Washington DC. Brooke’s most recent achievements include participating in Aqua 10, Pulse Art Fair, New York and the one page spread in Studio Visit magazine edition 13 or 14 of this year. Brooke has been the curator for the University of Arizona School of Art Joseph Gross Gallery since 2008.
