Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts RENOVATION

Construction work is underway on the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts' much-anticipated renovation, which has been designed by architect John Douglas of Douglas Architecture and Planning, P.C. with theater consultant Alec Stoll of Fisher Dachs Associates.

"We're thrilled to begin this exciting project," remarked Kathy Hotchner, vice president and director of the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. "When the renovation is finished, the Center will have a beautiful new atrium lobby and theater that will provide our audiences with the highest-quality arts experience."

During the renovation's first phase, which began in March, a number of major upgrades will be made to the atrium lobby, including a new floor, box office and café. The Scottsdale Public Art Program also plans to commission a major new work for the space. The renovation's second phase, a year-long overhaul of the 838-seat Virginia G. Piper Theater, will begin in the summer of 2008. When the theater reopens in the fall of 2009, patrons will enjoy many new improvements, including enhanced acoustics, lighting, seating, sightlines, air conditioning and accessibility.

The Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will be open for business throughout the renovation and will continue to offer to the community an exciting schedule of dance, jazz, classical and world music, theater and satire, as well as its educational programs and celebrated outdoor festivals. During the 2008-09 season, while the Virginia G. Piper Theater is undergoing renovation, many of the Center's performances will be presented at venues around the Valley. Classical performances will be held at the Pinnacle Presbyterian Church in north Scottsdale and at Theater 4301 at the Galleria Corporate Centre in downtown Scottsdale. The Center's dance, jazz, world music and theater series will be presented at venues in Tempe and central Phoenix, as well as in Theater 4301.

In addition, the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts' newly renovated atrium will be available for special events during the 2008-09 season, and a wide variety of performances will be presented in the Center's 136-seat Stage 2, the 2,200-seat Scottsdale Civic Center Mall Amphitheater and the 326-seat Theater 4301. The box office and popular Store @ Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts also will be open throughout the renovation. Complete details on the Center's 2008-09 season will be announced later in May.

The Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts opened in 1975 as part of the Scottsdale Civic Center complex designed by Arizona architect Bennie Gonzales. The City of Scottsdale, the owner of the facility, is funding the $14-million capital-improvement project through its general fund.

The Scottsdale Cultural Council, a private non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, is contracted by the City of Scottsdale, Arizona, to administer certain City arts and cultural projects and to manage the City-owned Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and Scottsdale Public Art Program. The programs of the Scottsdale Cultural Council are made possible, in part, by the support of members and donors and grants received from the Arizona Commission on the Arts through appropriations from the Arizona State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
